Arugam Bay

Best time of year to visit Arugam Bay

The best time to visit Arugam Bay is between May and November, especially for Surfers when the predominant wind is offshore for at least the first half of the day.

The bay is located 320 km due east of Colombo. “A’Bay” as Arugam Bay is locally known is a popular surfing and tourist destination.  If you’re after remote rural life with all the atmosphere of jungle and adventure this is the place for you.  Arugam Bay is the ideal place for surfers, water sports freaks and wildlife enthusiasts.

Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka’s South East Coast is famously known as one of ten top surf spots in the world.  This is Sri Lanka at its most escapist.  The relatively isolated beaches here and a simple, laid-back lifestyle away from the main tourist haunts have many devotees and is rapidly becoming a popular tourist’s destination.

Whether you want to dine on the beach in view of the sea or watch the world pass by from a sidewalk cafe, the cuisine of Arugam Bay offers just what you’re looking for.  A stroll along Main Street will take you past many traditional Sri Lankan cuisine restaurants serving some of the best rice and curry on the island.  Arugam Bay is also one of the best surf points in the world, receiving the same Antarctic winter swells that hit Indonesia’s southern shores in the middle of the year.
