Best time of year to visit Colombo
The busy streets of Colombo are welcoming right throughout the year for tourists from all corners of the Globe. However Colombo is a treat to visit especially in May and December when the entire city is lit up for festivities (Wesak, Christmas)

The Commercial Capital of Sri Lanka. The city which is just a 45 minute drive from the Bandaranaike International Airport is a city which of a plethora of activities for all tourists.

Colombo is a city with backstreet waterways and oddly shaped lakes. There’s a nice big park in the center of the city that kids love, called Viharamahadevi Park, and the famous Galle Face Green in the Colombo Fort also leading up to the Old Houses of Parliament in the vicinity of the latest 5 Star luxury hotel – Shangri-La Colombo which overlooks the Indian Ocean. A bit further off in the greater Colombo area are the Diyatha Uyana and Beddagama Wetlands.

The Galle Face Green is the public area of choice for most locals in Colombo. Right next to the ocean and close to Colombo Fort, the Galle Face Green is a historical landmark. The Galle Face Hotel is right next to it and there are some impressive hotels in the area. The hotels in front of the Galle Face Green are the Taj Samudra and the latest addition Shangri-La Colombo.

Viharamahadevi (Victoria) Park. The Victoria Park is the largest green open space inside the city. It is easy to spend an hour or two here with child-centered facilities. Apart from the paths to walk or run along, there are plenty of green areas to picnic or lounge on. In one corner of the park there is a nice little playground castle, some swings and slides and a water fountain that turns on a few times a day for the kids to cool off in. There are some snack huts with king coconut water and ice cream carts to keep everyone happy. There is also a huge golden Buddha that kids love to say hi to.

The Independence Square is the open area around the Independence Memorial in Cinnamon Gardens. There are green areas and walking paths, a bicycle track and places for sport and fitness. There is a memorial building and museum in honour of the Independence of Sri Lanka, too. The Independence Shopping Arcade is another popular place to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed tea, coffee, fresh juice and indeed a sumptuous snack or meal and souvenir shopping. This shopping complex Arcade is housed in a group of renovated buildings including the former Jawatta Lunatic Asylum and the former Western Provincial Council Building

The highly urbanized administrative Capital of Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is not only home to the new parliament building but also to the Beddagana Wetland Park. On the shores of the Diyawanna Lake, just south of Diyatha Uthana and Water’s Edge, Beddagana Wetland Park is full of walking paths, where visitors can see regional birds and wildlife.
