Best time of year to visit Yala

The best time to visit Yala is between the Months of February – July. This is the best time to spot Leopards & Elephants in the park as the water levels in the park are low.

Yala National park is the most visited and the second largest National park in Sri Lanka. It is situated in the South East region of the country.  Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and was one of the first two National parks in Sri Lanka. Having been designated in 1938, The park is best known for a variety of wild animals.
The park has a variety of ecosystems including Moist Monsoon Forests, Dry Monsoon Forests, Semi Deciduous Forests, Thorn Forests, Grasslands, Fresh Water and Marine Wetlands and Sandy Beaches.


Yala National park is renowned for its variety of wildlife, Notably it’s many Elephants. It is also home to the Spotted Deer, Sambar, Wild Buffalo, Sloth Bear, Jackal, Mongoose and Crockodiles. The Peacock is easily the most famous of the birds in the park. Yala has a high concentration of Leopards. Although, seeing these nocturnal carnivores still requires some luck.
